DAY 2: Tuesday 23 June 2015 – Expresso (05h00 – 10h00)
Today I woke up at about 3 am. The TV Presenters arrive at work at 4.45 am, so after having left super early, we hardly had any traffic and I arrived shortly after 5am. It was very chilly and as I had worn stilettos the previous day, I was asked by Lucian to wear tackies today as Expresso is far more intense than Afternoon Express. I had to sign in once again at Reception and then I was told to go up to the 7th floor. I had seen two teenagers signing; I found out later they were guests on the show. I made my way to the set and was absolutely blown away! The set was incredibly beautiful! I saw Katlego Maboe, Ewan Strydom and Graeme Watkins sitting down on the couches on their tablets, preparing for the show. I was directed to put my things outside and I went and sat down on one of the couches. Zoe Brown, another of the presenters, entered the studio with one of her best friends, Enja, and she approached me and introduced herself to me and asked me about myself and my work shadowing. Today I was a lot more involved. The show started and I stood on the side and tried not to get caught up in the cables. It started with Katlego standing outside in the dark and cold and saying hello in many different languages. The camera then switched to the news section inside while the cameras moved around. Again, every second counts. I moved quickly and quietly around the studio during each segment and throughout the show. I watched the monitor displaying what the viewers saw on television as opposed to what I was seeing in the studio. During the many ad breaks, there was lots of preparation with guests on the show being shown where to sit and being given an overview of their interview. The presenters would be reading their “bible” on their devices i.e. the pre-show overview, script-like documents which the presenters and production team use in preparation for the show. Throughout the show I got to see behind the scenes of what I see on Expresso when I watch the show at home on weekday mornings.
